United Way of Martin County Responds to Public Transit Shutdown, Calls for Community Support to Keep Residents Moving
Ashley Capital commits first $2,500 as United Way prepares for increased transportation needs amid existing funding challenges.
STUART, FL – Following the unexpected shutdown of Martin County's public transportation system, Marty, United Way of Martin County is preparing to help residents who have suddenly lost access to a critical means of transportation. Through its Ride United program, the organization can provide temporary assistance to eligible residents, but warns that without additional funding, its ability to meet the growing need will be limited.
For residents who rely on public transportation, the loss of service creates immediate challenges in getting to work, attending medical appointments, purchasing groceries and accessing other essential services. United Way's Ride United program helps address these transportation barriers by providing free, pre-scheduled Lyft rides for eligible Martin County residents.
However, the program was already facing significant financial strain before the latest disruption. Following other state funding cuts and increased demand, Ride United is currently operating far beyond its typical annual budget. With the sudden loss of public transit, United Way anticipates a substantial increase in requests for assistance that could push costs even higher.
"Transportation isn't a luxury for the people who depend on it. It's how they get to work, receive medical care and put food on the table," said Carol G. Houwaart-Diez, President & CEO of United Way of Martin County. "When a critical service like this disappears, the need doesn't disappear with it. United Way is here to help fill that gap, but we cannot do it alone. Our resources were already stretched before this announcement, and we need our community's support to keep these essential rides available."
Ashley Capital has already answered that call, stepping forward with an initial $2,500 contribution to support Ride United's response.
"We are incredibly grateful to Ashley Capital for recognizing the urgency of this situation and stepping up so quickly," added Houwaart-Diez. "Their generosity is helping us respond to an immediate need, and we hope it encourages other businesses, organizations and individuals to join us."
Since launching in September 2022, Ride United has provided thousands of rides to help Martin County residents overcome transportation barriers. Unlike a traditional public transit system, Ride United provides pre-scheduled, door-to-door transportation for eligible essential trips and cannot fully replace the capacity or services of Marty's bus routes and paratransit system.
United Way emphasizes that its response is a temporary measure, dependent on available funding, and that a sustainable, long-term transportation solution remains necessary for Martin County.
Community support will be critical to keeping essential rides available in the meantime. Individuals and businesses who wish to help can make a contribution at UnitedWayMartin.org/Donate and select “Ride United” under “Where do you want your donation to go?”
